I was reading 1Kings tonight and I found something that I thought was really cool so I decided to blog about it! In chapter 18 Elijah tells the Prophets of Baal to make an altar and sacrifice a bull on it to their god. But he tells them not to ignite it, instead, to prove whether or not Baal has power let him set it on fire. So they do just that. They pray for half the day trying to get their god to light the fire, but there is no response. Elijah then makes an altar of his own and tells the people to gather around and watch what God will do. He tells them to get 12 big jars of water to drench the sacrifice. He calls on God and fire falls from heaven, burning the sacrifice and the altar made of stones, resulting in everyone bowing before God. That in itself is an awesome story, but here's the part that I found really cool... In that time they were going through a drought. So not only did Elijah have the water poured on the sacrifice to prove God is powerful, but it was also a test of faith for the people. They were desperate for an answer. Baal had failed, but they still knew that God had power. They gave up the water supply they had left in faith that God would come through!
